Program Description
The Riverbank Youth Ice Hockey Program for Mites provides the
opportunity for players born in the years (2003 and 2004) who are
a beginner or intermediate level skaters to learn hockey basics.
The sessions focuses on basic skill development in skating and stick
and puck handling fundamentals and knowledge of the positions and
rules in hockey. Coaches will use specific drills and cross-ice
scrimmage sessions to support and develop proper skating techniques,
stick handling, passing skills and game play. Mites also participate
in cross-ice, half ice and full ice games against teams at the same
or higher level from other hockey programs. Mites who qualify, can
age up or move up one level to the Squirt program to better their
progress.
All players 7 and older must register with USA Hockey and pay a
$33 registration fee. The fee provides ice insurance, permission
to play games, and a subscription to the USA Hockey Magazine. Players

Program Duration
The Mite program begins November 2, 2011 and closes March 17, 2012.
The program lasts approximately 17 weeks.
Practice Sessions
Practice sessions are held Monday, Wednesday and Saturday (except
for holidays, special ice events, weather, etc.). Each practice
session is for 1 hour and 30 minutes and are held at Riverbank.
2011-2012 Mite Practice Schedule
Monday - 11/7 to 3/12 - 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM.
Wednesday - 11/2 to 3/14 - 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM
Saturday - 11/5 to 3/17 - 7:00 AM to 8:30 AM
Games
Games will be held on Saturday or Sunday mornings as scheduling
permits. Each game will substitute for one practice session. Games
are 36 minutes long and are divided into three 12 minute periods.
Cross ice, half ice and full length of the ice are used. Body checking
is not allowed. USA Hockey rules and referees are employed.
Program Requirements
1. It is recommended that all players wishing to participate in
the Mite Team program be able to skate at the beginning level.
Individual mite hockey skills to learn include:
a. Skating - be able to forward skate from the ready position,
maintain a forward stride, execute a controlled stop with a two
foot or one foot snow plow; backward skate across the width of the
rink, perform a backward stop; execute control turns on the left
and right edges of the skates and perform forward crossovers.
b. Puck Control - be able to dribble the puck side to side,
forward to backward, and diagonally, to shift puck to the forehand
and to accelerate forward with the puck. Be able to get by a defender
by maneuvering the puck under the defender's stick or skates (attacking
the triangle)..
c. Passing and Receiving - be able to make and receive a
forehand pass, backhand pass and to maintain eye contact during
passing and receiving.
d. Shooting - be able to make a wrist shot and backhand
shot.
e. Checking - be able to poke check, hook check and stick
lift check.
f. Goalkeeping - be able to show basic stance and perform
the parallel shuffle, lateral t-glide, forward and backward moves
and stick, glove and body saves.
2. All players participating in the Mite program MUST be fully
equipped at each practice session or game before they step onto
the ice. The following equipment is required to be worn by each
player in the program and must be put on and worn properly: shoulder
pads, elbow pads, hockey pants, shin guards, hockey socks and garter,
skates, hockey jersey, and properly fitted HECC certified hockey
helmet with face shield, hockey gloves, and hockey stick. Mouthpieces
and neck guards are also strongly recommended.
3. All players must be on time for practice. All players must respect
the coaches, each other, and behave in a sportsmanlike manner at
all times.

50 sessions including games over 17 weeks for $212.00 equals $4.24
per session!
